Sewer Utility Operator
Birch Bay Water and Sewer District (BBWSD) is now accepting applications for a Sewer Utility Operator. This is a full-time position with a generous benefit package. The District is looking for an experienced Sewer Utility Operator but is willing to give on-the-job training and support to acquire Sewer Operator certification levels.  This is a great position for a hard-working person willing to learn and grow in a new career.
Prefer experience in Sewer Utility Operator position; if not then 2 years experience in operations, construction, or maintenance. Applicants must have basic mechanical abilities and be willing to be trained in the specifics of sewer operation.  Applicants with less experience are encouraged to apply. 
Primary responsibilities include the following;
  • Performs a variety of functions relating to the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Wastewater Collection System, including Pump Stations.
  • Performs standard laboratory analyses necessary for WWTP process control as well as sampling and testing required under the NPDES permit.  It also helps meet the requirements to maintain the wastewater lab certification status managed by Department of Ecology.
$33.40/hr. to $41.73/hr. depending on experience

  • District-paid healthcare plans with a defined medical allowance, above the base salary, of $2,460.73 per month. A variety of plans to choose from and coverage begins at the start of employment. The unused amount of the allowance will be rolled into an HRA VEBA account to cover other medical expenses, such as deductibles, over-the-counter medications, etc.  Employees may opt out of District healthcare options and receive the medical allowance in the HRA VEBA account.

Requirements Qualifications:
L. High school graduate or recognized equivalent.
2. Two (2) years experience preferred of operations and maintenance work in a wastewater system or
other closely related experience, such as maintenance work in a process plant environment in which
systems and functions operate 24 hrs/day. Candidates with less than two years of experience will
be considered.
3. O.l.T. in Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation, or, must obtain OIT level (or higher) within 6
months of hire.
4. Ability to obtain Washington State Group L Wastewater Certification within two years; Group 2
Wastewater Certification within three years; higher levels of certification are encouraged.
5. Have the ability to obtain,
a. First Aid / CPR Certification.
b. Valid Washington State Flagging and Traffic Control Card.
c. A/C Pipe Safe Work Practice Certification.
d. CDL Class A license, and maintain valid CDL during employment.
Other Requirements:
1.. Valid Washington State Drivers License with a good driving record. (Candidates must submit a 3-year
driving abstract before hire)
2. Must be a non-smoker
3. Must have the ability to wear respirators and safety equipment.
4. Must work overtime and on weekends and holidays, as required.
5. Must accept on-call rotation, have the ability to answer calls 24 hrs/day, and, respond to the
Treatment Plant within 40 minutes when on call.
6. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
7. Ability to function positively effectively as a team member and communicate effectively with the
public and District employees.
8. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather for sustained periods'
9. Ability to adhere to all safety requirements.
10. Must have the ability to work in hazardous environments and with general municipal wastewater,
including raw sewage, grit, debris, and noxious odors, on a frequent and repetitive basis.
11. Must have the ability to read technical & operational manuals, troubleshoot, and make independent
decisions in a reasonable, logical manner.
1-2. Must have the ability to work under pressure, in emergencies
13. Ability to work with computers, including MS Office software programs, such as Word and Excel
