The Collections System Operator II/III work under the direction of the Collections System Supervisor via written, emailed, or verbal communication that requires the incumbent to understand, investigate and determine the appropriate procedures to follow to complete the work. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and work standards.
The Collections System Operator II/III, under direct supervision, is responsible for the specialized maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the wastewater collection system to ensure safe, efficient and reliable wastewater services are provided to customers throughout the District.
The Collections System Operator II/III ensures regulatory compliance in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, permits and guidelines.
The Collections System Operator II/III is expected to perform on-going and special project activities as assigned by the Collection System Supervisor or District Management.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work is regularly performed in the field. The incumbent will occasionally be exposed to extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time, confined spaces, automobile traffic, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, and various tools and equipment. Work involves exposure to live sewer systems, human waste, gases, fumes, loud noises, chemicals and pesticides.
Subject to 24-hour call-out for emergencies, computer/telemetry problems, power outages, etc. Incumbent shall maintain no more than a forty-five (45) minutes response time while on-call.
Occasional attendance at meetings, job fairs, training, etc. outside of normal business hours is required.

  • Receive on-the-job training on wastewater collection system operations and maintenance. Incumbent learns how to safely and efficiently operate and maintain the facilities and systems daily. Training will be provided by higher class certified wastewater collection system operators.
  • Operates pumps, control systems, and power equipment
  • Performs varied manual work and operates specialized equipment to maintain and/or repair wastewater collection systems; including inspecting and recording. Monitors operation of the system using methods such as visual inspection of equipment, reading gauges, instruments and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Operating a variety of vehicles, machinery and tolls, including but not limited to compressor, generator, locator, gas detector, power/rotating machinery and hand tools.
  • Performs and helps coordinate customer service duties such as responding to customer calls, emergencies, and complaints. Provide information and guidance to contractors, customers and service providers as necessary to prevent line damage.
  • Assists in District construction and repair projects and performs duties such as reviewing plans and schedules, on-site problem solving, or interfacing with customers and contractors.
  • Performs daily maintenance of sewer lift stations, pumps, etc. as required and documents necessary records. Perform operational tests and accomplish adjustments and corrective repairs; clean stations as required.
  • Maintain emergency generator (diesel or gas) sets. Check fuel, oil, filters, coolant and battery condition.
  • Performs regular District facility and vehicle checks.
  • Accurately read and record commercial water meters as scheduled.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitors and/or records Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)/Telemetry systems, gauges, meters and control panels.
  • Responds to system operations, emergencies and alarms.
  • Performs maintenance activities during normal operation and emergency situations, including cleaning, servicing, repairing and maintaining operational equipment.
  • Enters empty tanks and other confined spaces to perform inspections, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Performs general maintenance of facility grounds including mowing, weeding, pressure washing, painting, janitorial, scrubbing, basic carpentry and mechanical repairs, and other duties as required.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment, such as lubrication, oil changes, and belt changes. Performs routine repair work, such as disassembly, repair, and installation of valves, switches, process instrumentation, motors, and related equipment.
  • Diagnoses problems and takes corrective action as required, inspects and observes facility operations for proper functioning of equipment and machinery, takes meter readings, check operation of valves and gauges.
  • Gathers, tabulates, and records a variety of data and maintains logs. Follows maintenance schedules and maintains accurate records.
  • Assists with the coordination of specialized repair work with various contractors, suppliers, vendors, and other resources.
  • Maintains a safe work environment including utilizing appropriate safety devices and equipment.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Reaching, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, sitting, walking, grasping, dexterity, hearing, seeing, talking, and repetitive motions may be required. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • High School diploma or GED, AND three (3) months experience in wastewater collection technology; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Vocational training certificate or Associates degree or higher in wastewater treatment technology desirable.
  • Must pass job related tests.
  • Washington Wastewater Collection Personnel Association (WWCPA) Specialist II or III Certification
  • CDL license required
  • Washington State Flagger Certification will be required
  • A valid Washington State driver’s license required
  • CPR/First Aid certification will be required
